Façade vs rooflights – why façade windows are not enough

When it comes to renovating or rejuvenating your home there are a lot of decisions to make. One big decision you’ll need to take into consideration is how you want your windows to look. When you consider the positive impact that natural daylight has on your health and wellbeing, it’s an important one to make.

This will always boil down to a facade vs rooflight debate, and while there is certainly room for both, rooflights have several considerable benefits that façade windows on their own, just can’t offer.

Rooflights vs façade windows

To start with, vertical façade windows quite simply can’t offer the amount of light that a rooflight does. Rooflights offer up to twice as much light as façade windows of the same size - with dormers and flat roof rooflights in general it’s up to three times more. The amount of natural daylight that enters the home throughout the day can make a big difference not just to how your home looks, but also how you and your family feel too. Daylight plays an important role in the atmosphere of a family home.

It’s not just about pure daylight though, as rooflights also provide higher wall luminance which results in a softer transition between the high luminance of the windowpane and the adjacent wall. This results in less glare when compared to façade and dormer alternatives.

The rooflight difference

A rooflight will provide your home and your family with a multitude of benefits, including the ability to allow you to enjoy a vast amount of natural light and fresh air that will fundamentally transform your living spaces. This means that you’ll be able to enjoy the natural beauty more, which is also highly desirable for buyers when the time is right for you to sell. Rooflights aren’t just a purchase for the here and now but an investment for tomorrow and beyond.

They also do a wonderful job of connecting you with the outside world, allowing you to follow the circadian rhythm, a natural internal process that connects to the sleep-wake cycle that repeats roughly every 24 hours. Rooflights aren’t just healthy for your home but also for your mind and body.

Despite the wonderful advantages rooflights bring, façade windows absolutely have a place in every home and with them, you have the ability to still create a design that allows daylight into your home in different and unique ways by aligning them in specific locations. Speaking to a Vario by VELUX Daylight Expert will help you to work out the ideal position, placement and glazing options required to make the most out of them.

Renovating? It’s time to make a change

There aren’t many times when changing the exterior of the home is easy. While on the inside you can change things up pretty quickly, for the exterior, it’s a different matter. So, if you’re currently undergoing some renovation work, perhaps having work done on your exterior roof or walls, then it’s the perfect time to act. Upgrading your home to incorporate rooflights during a renovation will allow you to cut down on labour costs as it’s likely you’ll need the same mechanisms, scaffolding or other items in place anyway for both parts of the job.

You will always have the option of adding in rooflights at a later date but doing so during a renovation is the best time, as undertaking just a rooflight addition on its own can be expensive, so be cost-effective and improve your home with rooflights while completing another job on the exterior of your home.
